How to Prepare for a Rainy Photo Session
(and Why You Should Embrace It!)
There’s something undeniably romantic about a rainy-day photo session. Think of those iconic movie moments—like The Notebook—where the rain-soaked couple shares an unforgettable embrace. Rain might not be what you originally envisioned for your session, but with the right mindset and preparation, it can add a unique and magical touch to your photos.
As a photographer in Jasper, I’ve seen firsthand how beautiful rainy-day photos can be. One of my favorite memories was capturing a surprise proposal in the middle of a downpour. At first, the couple used umbrellas to stay dry, but after a while, they let go of them and fully embraced the moment. The photos? Pure magic. The rain added an extra layer of romance, making their session feel straight out of a love story.
To make sure you’re comfortable and ready to enjoy your session—whether it’s for a wedding, engagement, or couples' shoot—here’s a list of must-have items for a rainy-day photo session:
1. Umbrellas
I always keep two clear umbrellas on hand for my couples, as they let in light and work beautifully in photos. However, if you have a specific style in mind, feel free to bring your own! Whether you prefer a classic black umbrella for a timeless look or a fun, colorful one to add personality, an umbrella can be a great accessory while keeping you dry.
2. Rubber Boots or Waterproof Hiking Boots
This client of mine chose to wear hiking boots with her dress, which she was still able to hide in the shots with the wildflowers.
Wet grass, puddles, and muddy paths are all part of the rainy-day experience. Wearing rubber boots/hikers (or at least bringing them along) will keep your feet dry and allow us to explore more locations without worry. Plus, they can add a cute, playful touch to your photos!
3. Hand Warmers
When you’re not holding hands to stay warm, sneaky hand warmers in your pockets always help!
Rainy days can also mean chilly temperatures, especially in the mountains. Hand warmers are small but mighty when it comes to keeping your hands toasty between shots. They’re especially useful during engagement sessions and wedding portrait time when you’ll be holding hands, cuddling, and focusing on the moment rather than the cold.
4. Warm Clothing & Extra Socks
Having a rain jacket on hand for your photo session is never a bad plan.
Even if you’re wearing a beautiful dress or a tailored suit, layering up before and after the shoot will make a huge difference. Bring a cozy jacket, a stylish shawl, or a warm wrap to throw on between shots. Also, packing an extra pair of dry socks is a game-changer—no one likes cold, damp feet!
5. Tide to Go Pens
Mud and water droplets can sometimes leave marks on clothing, especially on wedding attire. A Tide to Go pen is a quick and easy fix for any unexpected splashes or stains.
Bonus Tip: Plan for Sheltered & Indoor Locations
If the rain is heavy, we can plan ahead for locations that offer natural cover. Forested areas help divert some of the rain, creating a dreamy, misty atmosphere while keeping you a little drier. For couples looking for an elegant indoor option, we can also head inside to a beautiful venue like the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, which offers stunning indoor spaces for part of your session.
Rainy-Day Photos Are Worth It
Embracing the rain can lead to some of the most breathtaking and intimate photos. The soft, diffused light, the way raindrops glisten in the background, and the cozy, in-the-moment feel of it all create something truly special.
No matter the weather, I always have a backup plan in place, ensuring that your session is stress-free and memorable. So if the forecast calls for rain, don’t worry—we’ll make the most of it and capture stunning, romantic moments you’ll cherish forever.
