Meet Jeff: The Other Half of Our Photography Team
Jeff is the other half behind the lens here at Megan Posein Photography. He’s my business partner, husband, and truly one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.
As part of The Meg and Peg Project (a collaboration between our 2 local photography businesses), Peggy and I wanted to take the time to introduce our business partners—Jeff and David. While Peggy and David (A Different Angle Photography) have been photographing weddings in Jasper for 25 years, Jeff and I have built our business together over the past ten years. Often, as the face of our brand, I’m the one people recognize in our photography business, but Jeff is an essential part of what makes our team so special. He’s not just my husband but also my business partner and an incredibly talented photographer in his own right. This post is all about Jeff—his journey into photography, his unique approach to capturing moments, and the role he plays in making our clients feel comfortable and at ease.
The whole crew behind A Different Angle Photography and Megan Posein Photography! A special thanks to David and Peggy for this group shot, and shooting with us on this -30c day!
How Jeff Got Into Photography
I started getting into photography semi-professionally before Jeff came into my life, so by the time we met, I already had a solid foundation. Naturally, I almost immediately put a camera in his hands. Back then, we were travelling and hiking constantly, so capturing our adventures became the perfect way for him to learn in a laid-back setting. Jeff has always been a fast learner and incredibly creative, and it didn’t take long for him to pick up photography and start capturing some truly stunning images. He’s also an absolute people person, which made him a natural fit for the business.
*Above are some images of Jeff and I back in the early days when we fell in love while adventuring and started our photography business.
Jeff says his love for photography started through his outdoor experiences. He’d reach these incredible locations and appreciate the beauty of the moment, knowing that no two experiences would ever be the same. He explains:
“I think for me, photography really started to be interesting when I started hiking, biking, and running as hobbies. I’d get to these different places through those activities, and the effort it took to get there, combined with the timing of the moment, made it special. I started taking cellphone landscapes because, in that instant, the view felt unique just for me. Now, I take that same mindset into our photo shoots, drawing our clients into the feeling that these moments are one-of-a-kind.”
Nowadays when Jeff gets behind the camera his images look something like this.
How We Work Together as a Team
Jeff and I have different but complementary styles when it comes to shooting. I usually take the lead in directing couples and setting up poses, making sure we get the "bread and butter" shots that our clients expect. Meanwhile, Jeff takes a more candid approach—capturing the in-between moments, the laughter, and the little interactions that make a gallery feel alive. He has an amazing ability to predict when a great moment is about to happen, which results in some of the most heartfelt and natural images.
“Learning photography from Megan was easy. We naturally work together as a team, and learning from her passion made it fun. Once I had the technical pieces down, I started to explore my creativity and found a niche in candid imagery. It complements the posed shots by adding an intimate perspective from a different point of view.”
Jeff and Megan, your photo experts! (Photo curtesy of A Different Angle Photography, thanks guys!)
*All of the above candid and detailed images were taken by Jeff and are totally his style. He has a knack for capturing these kinds of moments.
Jeff is also our gear expert. He’s constantly researching the best equipment for our work and often surprises me with new photography tech. I’ll come home to Jeff grinning and saying, "Guess what I bought?"—only to find out a new top-of-the-line camera or computer is on its way. He also preps our gear before every session, making sure everything is set up and ready to go.
Jeff’s Secret Weapon: Connecting with People
One of Jeff’s biggest strengths is his ability to put people at ease. While I focus on the technical side—posing, lighting, and composition—he’s chatting with clients, making them laugh, and creating a relaxed atmosphere. I especially notice this dynamic when we’re working with couples. If a groom is feeling stiff or awkward, Jeff’s presence immediately helps him loosen up. Instead of feeling like a formal photo shoot, the experience becomes more like a double date with friends.
All smiles and a laid-back/fun photo shoot. Best of all? Then photos turned out amazing!
This natural ability to connect also shines when we’re photographing kids. Jeff has an education degree and works full-time as an administrator at Jasper’s municipally run daycare. Kids absolutely love him—whenever we’re out in town, we’ll inevitably hear little voices shouting, "Jeff!" followed by a running hug. This same energy translates into our sessions. He knows exactly how to get kids giggling, making for some of the most authentic and heartwarming images.
“Working with kids has given me a natural instinct for reading people’s moods, mannerisms, and family dynamics. I adjust my approach depending on their energy, making it easier to capture real moments. I also have a good sense of timing when it comes to photographing kids, especially between the posed shots they might not love as much.”
Kids adore Jeff because he embraces their goofy fun side and fires it right back at them!
Why Jeff Loves Shooting in Jasper
Jeff and I both feel incredibly lucky to call Jasper home, and we love sharing its beauty with our clients. For Jeff, photography is about more than just capturing a beautiful landscape—it’s about sharing our personal connection to this place.
“Jasper is such a wild and amazing space, and it’s so much fun to share it with our couples. One of the most special parts of photographing here is that it’s our home. When we bring clients to these locations, I hope it helps them feel a deeper connection to the place as well.”
One of our favourite photo spots here in Jasper.
The Heart of Our Business
Through The Meg and Peg Project, we wanted to take the time to highlight our business partners—those who help us make magic behind the scenes. Jeff has been an integral part of our photography journey from the beginning, and while many people in town know him for his work at the daycare or his role as President of the Municipal Workers’ Union, he’s also an incredible photographer. I hope that by showcasing him more often, more locals will realize he’s a big part of Megan Posein Photography.

Elopement Packages in Jasper – Photo Coverage for Your Big Day
An adventure elopement in Jasper National Park (all photos by Megan Posein Photography)
Eloping is one of the most intimate and personal ways to tie the knot. With an elopement, you have the freedom to craft a day that’s entirely your own, without the stress and overwhelm of a traditional wedding. Whether you dream of a private ceremony surrounded by towering mountain peaks or a tranquil moment by a peaceful lake, Jasper National Park offers a stunning backdrop for your elopement.
But with so many ways to customize your day, one of the first questions couples ask me is: How much photography coverage do I need for my elopement? This is where the magic happens — once you know how long you want to spend capturing your memories, we can match you with the perfect elopement package to fit your vision.

This gives us time to focus on the ceremony, some portraits in a stunning spot, and any group photos with loved ones. If you're looking for a more laid-back, low-key experience, this is the way to go!

2. Half-Day Adventure Elopement – 4-5 Hours of Coverage
For those who want to dive deeper into the beauty of Jasper, a 4-hour (or up to 5-hour) package is perfect. We can take our time exploring different spots in the park and capturing the magic of your day — from your vows to candid moments while you adventure through Jasper’s rugged beauty. These longer sessions allow us to cover more ground, get creative with your photos, and really showcase the essence of your love against a stunning landscape.
3. Custom Full-Day Elopements
For couples wanting a full day of adventure, whether it’s a mix of ceremony photos, explorations, and even a picnic at a hidden spot, a full-day package can be tailored to your needs. Full-day coverage starts at 8 hours, and we can work together to customize the perfect timeline for you. These are ideal for couples who want to go deeper into Jasper and create an unforgettable experience from sunrise to sunset.
You just never know who will show up to your elopement!
What’s Included in Your Elopement Photography Package?
While every couple’s needs are different, most of my packages include:
Pre-Elopement Consultation: We’ll hop on a video call to chat about your vision for the day and discuss locations based on your preferences, accessibility, and safety within the park.
Wedding Portraits: Beautiful, candid moments of you two together — from the ceremony to intimate portraits.
Family and Guest Photos: If you’re inviting a few close friends or family, we’ll make sure to capture group shots, as well as any special moments you share with your loved ones.
Expert Location Recommendations: Based on your vision and our chat, I’ll suggest elopement-friendly spots in Jasper that align with your dream day.
Flexible Packages to Suit Your Needs
When it comes to my packages, flexibility is key. If you need engagement sessions, albums, or wall art, I offer higher-end packages that include those options. But don’t worry if you’re looking for something more straightforward — my a la carte options make it easy to customize and add prints, albums, and other keepsakes to any package.
Additionally, my higher-end packages include a second photographer, so you can get even more angles, shots, and candid moments captured. If you’re interested in this, let me know — we can always discuss options to add a second shooter.
My husband and business partner Jeff, he’s always there with a smile to help capture the day!
What’s the Vibe of Your Elopement?
The best part about eloping in Jasper is that your day can be exactly what you envision. Want to keep it private and intimate with just the two of you? That’s totally possible! Or, if you’d like a few friends or family to join in, that works too.
Just keep in mind that Parks Canada limits elopement groups to 25 people (including your photographer and officiant). This means you can enjoy a small, personal celebration with your loved ones while still having the park’s natural beauty as the backdrop.

How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Photographer
A shot from an adventure elopement we captured here in Jasper, with just the perfect amount of showers sprinkled in for an extra romantic vibe.
Planning your wedding is an exciting journey, but it comes with many big decisions—and choosing the perfect photographer is one of the most important. Your wedding photographer plays a vital role in capturing every magical moment, ensuring that your day lives on in beautiful, timeless images. With so many talented photographers out there, finding the right fit requires thoughtful consideration.
As a Jasper wedding photographer, I understand how meaningful it is to select someone who not only aligns with your vision but also makes you feel comfortable and confident on your special day. Let me guide you through the process.
This is a great example of my editing style: bold, romantic and adventurous.
Understand Your Needs
Before starting your search, reflect on what you and your partner truly want. Are you drawn to bright, airy images, or do you prefer a moodier, cinematic style? Unsure? You can learn more about my editing style and process here. Do you love the elegance of posed portraits, or is a candid, documentary approach more your vibe? Clarifying your preferences will help you find a Jasper photographer whose style matches your vision.
Budgeting is another key consideration. While it’s tempting to prioritize savings, remember that your wedding photos will last a lifetime. Allocate a reasonable portion of your budget to ensure you work with a professional who can deliver exceptional results. Investing in the right photographer will be worth it.
Finding a balance between the grand landscapes of Jasper, but showcasing each love story and the emotions from the day is important too!
Define Your Vision
Your wedding day is a reflection of your love story, and your photographer should capture it authentically. Take some time to envision how you’d like your day to be documented. For example, do you want sweeping landscape shots that highlight Jasper’s natural beauty? Or are you looking for intimate close-ups that showcase the joy and connection between you and your guests?
I love working with couples to bring their unique vision to life. Whether it’s capturing romantic moments against the backdrop of the Rockies or showcasing the charm of your chosen Jasper wedding venue, I’ll ensure every detail reflects your story.
Hey! It’s me, Megan! I’m always happy to hop on a call and chat about everything you’re dreaming up for your special day.
Meeting Your Photographer
Once you’ve honed your vision, it’s time to connect. Schedule a consultation to discuss your ideas and get to know each other. This in-person or virtual meeting allows you to share your plans and ensure we’re aligned. Building trust and a strong connection is essential, as your photographer will be with you throughout your most cherished moments.
Some questions to discuss during our meeting include:
What is your photography style?
How do you approach weddings at different venues?
Can we view full galleries from past weddings?
What’s included in your packages?
How do you handle unexpected challenges, like weather or timelines?
A great partnership is built on clear communication and mutual understanding, ensuring your day runs smoothly and beautifully.
It always makes me tear up watching a groom get emotional when they see their bride for the first time as she walks down the aisle. So sweet!
Reviewing Portfolios with Intention
When reviewing portfolios, pay attention to more than just the aesthetic. Look for emotional storytelling. Do the photos capture genuine moments of love and joy? The best Jasper photographers will highlight candid emotions alongside posed portraits, creating a well-rounded collection.
It’s also worth noting how they adapt to various Jasper wedding venues. Whether your wedding is set against the dramatic peaks of the Rockies or an intimate forest clearing, a skilled photographer will showcase the natural beauty of your surroundings while keeping the focus on you.
From adventure elopements to entire wedding days, we can help customize the photography coverage you need!
Comparing Packages and Pricing
As we work together to plan your photography needs, we’ll discuss all the details of my packages. From engagement sessions to albums, you’ll know exactly what to expect. Consider what’s included—coverage hours, editing, delivery timelines—and let’s tailor a plan that suits your unique celebration.
I believe in transparency and value, ensuring you receive exceptional service and images that exceed your expectations. Choosing a photographer is an investment in preserving your memories for years to come.

Final Thoughts
Choosing your wedding photographer is about more than just beautiful images; it’s about finding someone you trust to preserve your memories in a way that feels authentically you. By clarifying your vision, building a connection, and discussing every detail, we can create something truly extraordinary.
Whether you’re drawn to the grandeur of Jasper National Park or the charm of local Jasper wedding venues, I’d be honored to help you capture every heartfelt moment. Let’s create something truly unforgettable together.
Exploring Jasper's Wedding Venues Post-Fire: The Meg and Peg Project
After losing their homes in the recent Jasper wildfires, Megan and Peggy (2 local pro photographers) are teaming up with the “Meg and Peg Project” to showcase the beauty of Jasper after the fires.
The wildfires that swept through Jasper left a lasting impact on the landscape, but they also showcased the region’s resilience and beauty. In this collaboration between two local photographers (The Meg and Peg Project- Megan from Megan Posein Photography and Peggy from A Different Angle Photography), we explore two of Jasper’s cherished wedding venues: the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge (JPL) and the Athabasca Day Use Area. Both spots, although affected by the fire, continue to hold special meaning for couples seeking a picturesque setting for their wedding day.
Timeless Elegance: Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge After the Fire
A shot overlooking the Jasper Park Lodge’s Pool, Lac Beauvert, and the recently burned trees in the distance.
Peggy’s Perspective
1) What makes the Fairmont special for weddings, even after the fire?
For me, the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is the heart of Jasper—a place where the majesty of the Rockies meets the warmth of Alberta hospitality. It’s my go-to spot, not just for celebrations but for moments of quiet reflection. Whether I’m enjoying soup and wine with our dogs or walking them around Lac Beauvert, JPL has this incredible way of making every moment feel meaningful.
Even after the fire, that magic hasn’t faded. The lodge stands resilient, surrounded by stunning views of lakes and mountains. While parts of the landscape may look different, there’s a new beauty in watching nature’s renewal—a reminder of strength and hope.
What truly sets JPL apart, though, is the people. The staff is nothing short of extraordinary. They’re the heart and soul of the lodge, going above and beyond to make every wedding, celebration, or quiet getaway unforgettable. Their care and dedication add a personal touch that makes JPL feel like more than just a venue—it feels like home.
And, of course, JPL is a place for everyone. From sipping wine in The Emerald Lounge to enjoying a cold beer from Folding Mountain Brewery on the patio, it’s where elegance meets comfort. It’s where love stories unfold and unforgettable memories are created, all against the stunning backdrop of Jasper’s timeless beauty.
For weddings, there’s nowhere quite like it. The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge wraps every celebration in the magic of Alberta’s charm and Jasper’s soul—creating a place that’s as welcoming as it is extraordinary.
2) What new opportunities do you see for capturing unique moments at this venue?
The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge has always boasted stunning backdrops, and even after the fire, much of the property remains untouched. The main grounds are as beautiful as ever, offering the classic, timeless settings that make JPL so special. From the serene waters of Lac Beauvert to the beautifully maintained lawn area, the lodge continues to provide countless opportunities for breathtaking photos.
What excites me most is the hope for renewal in the surrounding landscape as we move into spring and summer. While the fire didn’t affect the main parts of the property, nearby areas were affected. I’m looking forward to seeing how the landscape transforms in the coming seasons, as nature brings fresh beauty to Jasper in its own remarkable way.
The venue also continues to inspire more candid moments. Whether it’s couples laughing together on a sundeck , families playing on the vibrant green lawns, or quiet reflections by the lake, JPL naturally encourages authentic connections. These interactions, paired with the promise of a changing and renewing landscape, create the perfect recipe for capturing meaningful, timeless photographs.
JPL’s enduring beauty, combined with the anticipation of nature’s renewal, is a reminder of Jasper’s strength and resilience. I can’t wait to document not only the love and joy that happens here but also the evolving story of this incredible place.
3) How do you think the JPL embodies the spirit of recovery and renewal in Jasper?
Jasper Park Lodge has always been the spot for couples and families looking for that perfect Jasper experience. From epic weddings to cozy family getaways, it’s a place where unforgettable memories are made. And honestly, what’s not to love?
Like everyone in Jasper, the staff at JPL have felt the impact of the fire, and it’s shaped how they approach everything moving forward. But here’s the thing—the staff that came back didn’t just return for a job. They came back because they love Jasper, they love JPL, and they’re passionate about making sure every guest feels the magic of this place.
There’s something special about the way the lodge has embraced recovery. It’s still the same breathtaking venue, with stunning views of Lac Beauvert and that cozy lodge vibe, but there’s a new layer to its story now. It’s not just a place to stay—it’s a testament to the strength of this community and the spirit of renewal.
JPL continues to welcome people (and dogs!) from all over, reminding us that even after challenges, there’s always room for celebration, connection, and a little bit of Jasper magic. Honestly, it’s impossible not to leave this place feeling inspired and recharged.
A Personal Connection: Athabasca Day Use Area After the Fire
A shot of the ceremony spot at the Athabasca Day Use Area after the 2024 wildfires. The altar area remains nearly unchanged and serene.
Megan’s Perspective
1. How has the Athabasca Day Use Area changed since the fire, and what remains its most captivating feature?
When I first drove past the Athabasca Day Use Area after the fire, I was on my way into Jasper for the first time since our home burned down. This spot is particularly special to me because Jeff and I were married there in 2023. It was one of the first places showing signs of fire damage as you entered the park from the east. Seeing the altar area still standing brought immense relief, even though I was unsure about the rest of the site.
Upon its reopening in September, Peggy and I visited to assess the changes. We were very pleasantly surprised to find the infrastructure intact and the ceremony site untouched. The grass had already turned a lush green, and the surrounding mountains still offered their stunning views. However, the forested area had been transformed, with many of the trees burned, altering the once-verdant landscape.
The most captivating feature of this venue remains the pergola with its breathtaking mountain views and the river flowing behind it. Despite the changes, the essence of its beauty endures.
2. What should couples consider when choosing this venue post-fire?
Couples should be aware that the forest won't be as lush as before, but it's expected to evolve with new growth, including wildflowers and Aspen trees. Without the dense spruce forest, there is less natural protection from the elements. This means couples should be prepared for varied weather conditions, bringing warm layers, rain gear, and umbrellas.
Despite these challenges, the Athabasca Day Use Area offers privacy, affordability, and unparalleled natural beauty, making it still a worthwhile choice for couples.
3. How does the Athabasca Day Use Area reflect Jasper’s resilience and beauty after the wildfire?
The rapid regrowth of grass and the emergence of an out-of-season crocus symbolized (for us) Jasper’s resilience and natural recovery. The Athabasca Day Use Area stands as a testament to this spirit of renewal, mirroring the broader recovery efforts in Jasper. I am confident that this venue will continue to thrive and remain a beautiful setting for weddings in the years to come.
Through the charred ground re-emerges new grass and a special September treat- a crocus! These wildflowers are generally only found in the Spring, so we loved what this little guy represented at this well-loved wedding area.
Our re-explorations of the Athabasca Day Use Area and the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge reveal not just the beauty of these venues but the heart of Jasper’s recovery. Both venues offer unique charms for couples seeking a wedding location that symbolizes resilience, beauty, and timeless love. As nature continues to heal, these sites will only grow more captivating, making them perfect choices for unforgettable Jasper weddings.
Planning a Wedding in Jasper After the Wildfires: Your Comprehensive Guide
A Bride standing in the tall grasses in an area that had a recent burn in Jasper National Park (all photos by Megan Posein Photography)
Jasper, Alberta, has always been a dream destination for couples looking to tie the knot amidst the rugged beauty of the Canadian Rockies. The summer of 2024 brought significant challenges to our beloved town when a large wildfire swept through parts of Jasper National Park. Yet, while the landscape has changed in some areas, Jasper remains as stunning, resilient, and wedding-ready as ever.
If you’re wondering what Jasper looks like after the fire, whether businesses are open, or how the popular wedding venues fared, this guide will give you the answers you need. As a local Jasper photographer who has spent time documenting the recovery and capturing photos of our most popular wedding locations, I’m here to reassure you: Jasper is ready to welcome you for your special day.

The Impact of the 2024 Wildfire on Jasper
While the fire significantly impacted some areas of Jasper, the sheer size of the park means that many beloved locations remain untouched. Here’s a quick overview:
Affected Areas: The wildfire primarily impacted the Icefields Parkway (Hwy 93) from the Kerkeslin area to the edge of town, 1/3 of the Jasper townsite (primarily residential), and parts of the Maligne Valley, including the backside of Jasper Park Lodge (JPL) towards Maligne Canyon.
Untouched Areas: Iconic spots like Pyramid Lake, Pyramid Island, Maligne Lake, Medicine Lake, and the entire eastern side of the park remain just as breathtaking as always. South of Kerkeslin, the Icefields Parkway also remains unchanged.
For those planning weddings in Jasper, this means there is still an abundance of stunning venues and scenic backdrops to choose from.
You can view Parks Canada’s detailed wildfire map here.

Which Wedding Locations Were Affected?
The good news? Many of Jasper’s most sought-after wedding venues are still open and ready to host your 2025 weddings. Here’s a breakdown:
1. Jasper Park Lodge (JPL)
JPL remains one of Jasper’s most iconic wedding venues. While a few structures on the outskirts of the property were affected, the main building and popular ceremony/reception sites are intact. I recently visited JPL and captured photos to showcase that the views remain as stunning as ever, and their exceptional service continues to shine.
This pavilion at the Jasper Park Lodge is a common spot for weddings here. It still overlooks absolutely beautiful views
2. Athabasca Day Use Area
This rustic, beautiful ceremony spot did experience some forest fire damage, but thanks to incredible firefighting efforts, the infrastructure remains intact. The site is still open for bookings through Parks Canada, and the surrounding landscape now offers dramatic new contrasts—think stunning blackened trees, rugged mountain views, and open skies.
The alter at the Athabasca Day Use Area is intact and still serene, although the nearby forest was impacted by the burn
3. Maligne Wilderness Kitchen (Impacted)
Unfortunately, the Maligne Wilderness Kitchen was completely lost to the fire. As of now, there are no confirmed plans for rebuilding, but couples can stay updated via their website for any future announcements.
4. Tekarra Lodge (Impacted)
Tekarra Lodge sustained significant fire damage and is now closed for rebuilding. Updates on their progress will be shared via their website and social media.
Unaffected Venues
Many venues remain untouched by the wildfire, including:
Forest Park Hotel and Jasper Inn and Suites (east side of town)
With so many options still available, Jasper remains an incredible place to celebrate your wedding.
Winter Wedding photos at Pyramid Island
Addressing Guest Accommodations
One concern for couples planning a Jasper wedding post-fire is reduced hotel capacity. Some hotels are currently hosting Jasperites who lost their homes, while others experienced fire damage and are temporarily closed while they rebuild.
Tips for Guests:
Book Early: Encourage your guests to secure their accommodations as soon as possible. Larger hotels like JPL and Pyramid Lake Lodge are great options but will fill up quickly.
Look to Hinton: If needed, Hinton (a 45-minute drive from Jasper) offers additional hotel options.
Camping: Note that a few popular campsites, especially Whistler and Wapiti—are being rebuilt and Jasper will have limited camping availability in 2024.
Why Jasper is Even More Special After the Fire
Jasper’s small-town charm and close-knit community have only grown stronger through this experience. When you visit now, you’ll sense a deep camaraderie and resilience among locals, along with a renewed gratitude for the park’s beauty. Supporting local businesses during your wedding planning not only benefits the community but also helps rebuild the place we all know and love.
The fire has also given Jasper a new kind of beauty:
Dramatic Landscapes: Blackened trees offer striking contrasts against white wedding dresses and bright wildflowers.
Enhanced Mountain Views: The fire opened up new sightlines, making Jasper’s rugged peaks even more prominent.
Wildflower Explosions: Nature’s regrowth after a fire is breathtaking—tall grasses, vibrant wildflowers, and open meadows abound.
As a photographer, I’ve captured wedding photos in older burn areas, showcasing the artistic beauty that these landscapes now offer. The juxtaposition of resilience and natural beauty tells a powerful story—one that mirrors the strength of couples choosing to marry in Jasper.
The blackened trees against a white dress and a bright bouquet are a gorgeous combination for wedding photos
Why Hire a Local Jasper Wedding Photographer?
Now, more than ever, it’s important to hire a local photographer for your Jasper wedding. Here’s why:
Local Expertise: We know which areas are open, safe, and perfect for photos. From trail reports to hidden gems, we’ll help you find the perfect backdrops.
Licensed for Jasper National Park: Local photographers (like me!) are already licensed to work in the park, saving you the hassle and extra fees.
Supporting the Community: When you hire local, you’re directly supporting Jasper’s recovery and the people who call this place home.
The Beauty of Jasper Lives On
While the 2024 wildfire changed parts of Jasper, it didn’t take away the magic of this place. The mountains still stand tall, the lakes remain crystal clear, and the wildlife continues to thrive. For couples looking to celebrate their love in a place that embodies resilience, natural beauty, and a strong sense of community, Jasper is ready to welcome you.
If you’re planning your wedding in Jasper, I’d love to help you capture your day in a way that celebrates both your love story and the beauty of this special place.

Having a Winter Wedding in Jasper: What You Need to Know
Winter wedding photos captured in Jasper (all photos by Megan Posein Photography)
A winter wedding in Jasper is the epitome of romance—think snow-dusted landscapes, cozy fireside moments, and stunning mountain backdrops that look like something out of a fairytale. If you’re planning a winter wedding, Jasper National Park provides a magical setting, but it’s important to be prepared for the unique conditions that come with the season. As a local photographer, I’ve captured countless winter weddings and can offer practical tips to make your day unforgettable, warm, and stress-free. Here’s everything you need to know about Winter Weddings in Jasper.
Why Choose a Winter Wedding in Jasper?
While summer weddings in Jasper are undeniably beautiful, winter weddings have their own distinct charm and advantages. Here are some reasons couples fall in love with the idea of saying “I do” during the colder months:
1. More Affordable: Winter is Jasper’s off-season, which means you can often secure better rates for venues, accommodations, and vendors. If you’re working with a tighter budget, a winter wedding can give you more value without compromising on the magic.
2. Easier Availability: With fewer couples getting married in the winter, it’s much easier to book your dream venue and date.
3. Stunning Scenery: Imagine a fresh snowfall dusting the trees, glistening icicles, and mountains glowing under a winter sky. Jasper in the winter is like stepping into a snow globe.
4. Intimacy and Quiet: Fewer tourists on the trails and in popular locations means you get more privacy for your ceremony, portraits, and celebrations. It’s peaceful, serene, and incredibly romantic.

Getting to Jasper in Winter: Travel Tips for You and Your Guests
One of the most common concerns for winter weddings in Jasper is travel. The good news? With proper planning, getting here can be straightforward and safe.
Recommended Route: Fly into the Edmonton International Airport (YEG). From Edmonton, take Highway 16 (the Trans-Canada Highway) west to Jasper. It’s a smooth 4-hour drive with cell service for most of the route, and the highway is well-maintained with regular plowing and sanding.
Avoid Highway 93 in Winter: While the drive through Banff and up Highway 93 from Calgary is stunning, it’s not ideal for winter travel (especially when you can't be flexible with booked dates). Here’s why:
Large stretches of the road have no cell service.
The route is remote with unpredictable alpine weather.
Closures for avalanche control can happen suddenly.
The road isn’t maintained as frequently as Highway 16.
Pro Tip: If you plan to rent a car, ask the rental service if winter tires are included. Not all rental vehicles in Alberta come equipped with them, but they’re essential for safety on snowy and icy roads, especially in the mountains.
If you do plan on traveling on Highway 93, I would recommend doing so as a daytrip from Jasper, not as a necessary drive through from Calgary, especially when you have an important wedding date scheduled and can’t be flexible with your arrival.

Staying Warm: Practical Tips for Winter Wedding Portraits
Winter weddings in Jasper are breathtaking, but the cold can pose challenges—especially during your portrait session. Here’s how to stay warm while capturing stunning images:
1. Layer Up: Wear multiple layers under your wedding attire. Thermals, leggings, and thick socks will be your best friends. You’d be surprised how much warmth you can retain with smart layering.
2. Plan for Warm-Up Breaks: We’ll take quick pauses during your session to warm up inside or near a fire. I always keep this flexible and work at a pace that keeps everyone comfortable.
3. Bring Extra Clothing: Keep a bag with warm essentials: mittens, scarves, a cozy coat, and even an extra pair of boots. Having these on hand ensures you’re prepared if the cold becomes too intense.
4. Choose Winter Wedding Accessories: Incorporate beautiful and functional winter attire into your wardrobe. Think fur wraps, capes, velvet shawls, and elegant muffs. Not only will they keep you warm, but they also look stunning in photos!
5. Hand Warmers Are Key: Stick hand warmers in your pockets, boots, or even your bra—wherever you need them most. They’re a small but mighty addition that makes a huge difference.
6. Plan A and Plan B Locations: I always work with couples to create a Plan A and a Plan B for portraits. Jasper has a mix of exposed and sheltered areas—if the weather is unbearably cold, we’ll switch to a warmer, more protected location to keep everyone happy and safe.

Our Favourite Winter Wedding Venues in Jasper
While I won’t reveal all the magical spots here, I do want to highlight a couple of incredible venues that excel at winter weddings:
1. Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge:
The Fairmont is a fantastic choice because they offer both indoor and outdoor ceremony options. What makes this venue particularly great for winter weddings is their flexibility. You can decide on the day whether you want your ceremony indoors or outside, depending on the weather conditions.
2. Pyramid Lake Lodge:
Pyramid Lake Lodge is a winter gem. It boasts a stunning view of Pyramid Mountain, and there’s always a cozy bonfire burning. If the ice is thick enough, you can even skate on Pyramid Lake—how magical is that? You’ll get breathtaking winter portraits, and you can easily warm up inside or by the fire between shots.
The bonfire burning just outside of Pyramid Lake Lodge.
Embracing the Winter Theme: Unique Ideas
A winter wedding in Jasper is already magical, but you can lean into the season to make your day extra special. Here are a few ideas:
1. Winter Decor: Think pinecones, evergreen garlands, candles, twinkle lights, and cozy blankets for guests. A winter-themed hot chocolate bar or mulled wine station is also a fun and festive touch.
2. Creative Send-Offs: Traditional send-offs like sparklers may not always be allowed in the park during winter, so consider these alternatives:
Lanterns: Guests can hold lanterns or fake candles to create a romantic, glowing path.
Bells: Have guests ring small silver bells as you make your exit—it’s charming and festive.
3. Warm Treats: Offer cozy comfort foods like s’mores, hot apple cider, and warm pastries to keep guests toasty.
These wedding favours from this Jasper wedding were adorable, and a hit with the guests!
Final Thoughts: Why Local Expertise Matters for Winter Weddings in Jasper
Planning a winter wedding requires careful thought and flexibility, and having a local team makes all the difference. As a Jasper-based photographer, I know:
Which areas are sheltered and ideal for winter portraits.
How to create backup plans for unpredictable weather.
Which venues and trails remain open and accessible during the winter season.
The conditions of areas affected by recent burns and how they’re recovering.
Your day should be magical, stress-free, and perfectly you—and that’s exactly what I aim to deliver.
Keeping couples warm when it is chilly takes some planning, but we make it work! The images are always so worth it.

Capturing Jasper’s Aurora Borealis: The Ultimate Setting for Couples Photos
A couple in Jasper National Park watching the aurora dance over the mountain tops.
Long before I was a couples photographer, I was a landscape photographer with a special interest in capturing Alberta's incredible night skies. I spent many nights under the stars, shooting some unbelievably beautiful images, and it quickly became a passion of mine. Soon enough, people were asking if they could tag along on my photo adventures and be part of the images I was creating—and I was more than happy to oblige. Adding that human element to my landscapes made the photos feel so much more compelling, and it was a joy sharing those moments with people who got to experience it with me.
Now that I'm a professional couples photographer in Jasper, I still get asked if I can capture people under the stars with the aurora—and the answer is, of course! If the space weather data works in our favor and the skies are clear. Chasing the aurora can be fickle, and I want to share a bit about what goes into these unique photo sessions and how I help make it an unforgettable experience for couples.
A couple’s aurora photo I shot long before I moved to Jasper and become a professional photographer.
What to Expect When Chasing the Aurora
Many people traveling to Jasper think we get nightly aurora shows, but sadly, that's not the case. While Jasper is far enough north to offer a good chance, it’s still not guaranteed. There are two big factors that determine aurora visibility: space weather and earthly weather.
On the space weather side, it all depends on solar flares and geomagnetic activity. Sometimes I get asked, “What time does the aurora come out?” And the answer is, whenever the sun has flared enough in our direction, which could be at any time! The best chances tend to fall during the winter months because our long, dark nights give more opportunities to see the lights. But even if the forecast shows promising space weather, there’s still one final wildcard: clouds.
Sometimes the aurora doesn’t show up the way we had planned, but the mountain landscapes at night are still beautiful on their own.
Preparation Tips
A night under the aurora is magical, but it can also be chilly! It’s important to dress in layers—bring extra thermals, gloves, and hand warmers. A headlamp is a lifesaver for navigating at night, and I always recommend bringing a thermos with a warm drink to stay cozy.
Since every session depends on the weather, I also work with couples to stay flexible. Some nights may call for a waiting game, and other times, we may need to reschedule to improve the chances of catching a vivid display. A bit of patience goes a long way in aurora chasing, and I find it makes the moment even more special when it all comes together.
Waiting for the aurora and stargazing in the meantime. Notice how bundled up these two are? The clearer the sky, the colder the night.
The Experience of a Winter Night in Jasper
Even if the aurora doesn’t put on the show we hope for, taking couples photos in Jasper at night is an experience on its own. Imagine standing together under a sky full of stars, wrapped in the quiet stillness of the snow-covered landscape, breathing in the crisp mountain air. On the nights when the aurora does dance across the sky, it’s mesmerizing—a moment that feels larger than life and often feels like it's just for the two of you.
Some auroras are vibrant and wild, just like the images you see online, while others are gentle and hazy (I like to call these the “blobaura” nights). No two nights are the same, but the quiet adventure of watching the sky with someone special is always worth it.

Ready to Give it a Shot?
If you’re ready to embark on this adventure with me, the best way to start is to reach out via my handy dandy contact form. From there, we can set up a phone call, and I’ll go over all the details on what to bring, how we’ll plan for the weather, and what to expect from your session.
Aurora photos take patience and a little luck, but when the conditions line up, they create memories (and images) you’ll never forget. So, let’s see what the night has in store and capture an experience that’s as beautiful as it is rare.

Elopement Photos in Jasper, After Your Wedding Day
Self Portrait of Jeff and I in a glacial ice cave for our Wedding Portrait Project
Last year my partner Jeff and I got married, and to celebrate we decided to take our own wedding photos in some of our most favourite spots in Jasper; areas that we didn't have the time to visit on our actual wedding day. In this process, we wanted to inspire other couples to think outside the box when it comes to wedding photography and realize that you can do anything you want if you're flexible with the idea. Did you decide to elope in another country or have a super traditional wedding that your parents planned, but now want to get those wedding photos in the mountains like you had always dreamed of? Time to pull your gown and suit out of the closet and put them to work again!
Make Jasper your Mini Honeymoon
After the stress of wedding planning is finished, it's time to kick back and relax with your partner. Book a little getaway in one of the most beautiful places in the world and take in the tranquil surroundings of the Rockies. Then let's go for a photo adventure where we plan out exactly what you're dreaming up! Taking photos with no stress of fitting it all into a wedding timeline makes for such an easy going environment and that translates into gorgeous images.
Choose your own Adventure
When you do an elopement photo session after your wedding you can really plan out something unique and fitting for both you and your partner. This could mean an easy stroll along one of the pristine mountain lakes, or a hike into one of the glacial ice caves- whatever you're comfortable with. If you do choose an adventure that is a little more on the extreme side (like that ice cave endeavour) it does require an additional cost for a guide, but that is something we can chat about in the planning process. However, you get complete control of how you want to plan your day, which is exactly how an elopement should be!
Make it Special
If you want to make your photos that are done after your wedding day a little more sentimental and memorable, save your vows for this time. It's honestly so much more intimate and raw when it's just the two of you reading your vows to one another while standing in a breathtaking spot surrounded by mountains. As your photographer I will be standing back and capturing your emotions in the moment, but will not be interrupting this special moment. This is especially great for couples who are more private and hate big crowds. Saying your vows traditionally in front of a gathering of family and friends can sometimes make them rushed. When it's just the two of you it's something you'll remember forever. Then afterwards, let's pop that champagne!
A couple saying their vows privately near the river while we photograph from a distance
Non traditional weddings are more common now and it's great to see couples making their union really unique and true to their own personalities. If this sounds appealing to you, let's chat! I'm always happy to answer questions and give suggestions to help plan your own elopement photo adventure.
Choosing the Right Wedding Photographer: Understanding Editing Styles
From a wedding I photographed here in Jasper National Park with my personal editing style.
Your wedding day is one of the most memorable and significant moments of your life, and capturing those precious memories through photography is essential. As you embark on the journey of selecting a wedding photographer, it's important to understand the various editing styles and approaches that photographers employ. In this blog post, I'll delve into the nuances of editing styles and offer insights to help you choose the perfect photographer for your special day.
Examples of different editing styles with one image.
Understanding Different Editing Styles
There are countless editing styles in wedding photography, ranging from light and airy to dark and moody, and from natural and timeless to bold and dramatic. Some photographers prefer a clean and classic look, while others experiment with trendy presets or filters.
When choosing a photographer for your wedding day it is essential to choose someone who's work aligns with the photo vision you have in mind. Think about photographers as artists and how they edit their photos is their own personal artistic style. If you vibe with a photographer, but ask them to edit their photos to fit a totally different editing style, you run the risk of photos you may not love. Why? It would be like asking a painter to paint in a different style. It may be do-able but it ties their hands creatively and is something they are not used to. It puts them outside their comfort zone and at that can translate into awkward edits on some of the most special photos you'll ever have taken.
Retouching acne and wrinkles, removing
under eye bags and
correcting skin tone.
In Depth Edits
Another consideration to keep in mind when choosing a potential wedding photographer is how in depth they edit their photos. Here are some things that certain photographers will do, and others do not:
-softening or removing acne
-softening skin
-teeth whitening
-skin tone corrections (for instance, if a person's hands/ears are red from the cold, that can be fixed)
-removing unsightly objects from photos
-dress whitening/stain removal
The list does go on. Some photographers will edit heavier than others (if needed) so it's a good idea to bring this up in your consultation before hiring anyone. It is also a good idea to take a look at the galleries available on the websites or social media feeds of the photographers that you are considering.
The first image is straight out of the camera (no edits), the second is my AI edit and the third photo is one that I polished by hand afterwards (mostly focused on refining the details on the subject).
Explaining the Difference Between AI Editing Software and Manual Editing
These days AI is advancing at an unprecedented rate and it has certainly reached the photography community. Some people do not realize that AI can be utilized in editing, and with that there are some things to consider. Understanding the distinction between AI editing software and manual editing can help couples make informed decisions when choosing a photographer. Here's an overview of the two approaches and my personal preference:
AI Editing Software: AI editing software has become more impressive in recent years, offering amazing capabilities for automatic photo corrections. However, in my opinion, AI editing should be used as a supplementary tool rather than the sole method for editing photos. While AI can handle basic corrections such as lighting and saturation, it may lack the nuanced touch and artistic vision that manual editing provides. AI cannot recognize a drunken guest in the background that is distracting from a special moment between the bride and groom, where as a human eye would immediately crop them out.
Manual Editing: Manual editing involves hands-on adjustments made by the photographer, allowing for greater control and customization. I prefer manual editing because it enables me to apply a polished and in-depth editing process that enhances the unique beauty of each photo. From removing acne and whitening teeth to eliminating unsightly objects or distractions, manual editing allows me to tailor each image to perfection.
Personal Approach: While I utilize AI technology for basic corrections, such as adjusting lighting and saturation, I always follow up with manual editing to ensure the highest quality results. My AI is trained to understand my personal editing style, providing a helpful starting point for the editing process. However, I believe that the human touch is essential for achieving the level of refinement and attention to detail that couples deserve in their wedding photos.
This is a great example of my editing style: bold, romantic and adventurous.
What Does My Personal Editing Style Look Like?
As mentioned above, I do utilize AI as a base to start my edits but I still comb through every image I take and spend the time to re touch the photos as needed by hand. You are paying me a good amount of money for your photos, and I want to make sure every image is up to my standards.
I would describe my editing style is bold, romantic and adventurous. Now what the heck does that mean? Bold because I love to capture all of the special moments while enhancing the natural beauty of my clients and Jasper (without making things look unnatural). Romantic, because although it's easy to photograph the surrounding mountain landscapes, my focus is still primarily on the love story being told and the emotions that come with that. Lastly, there is a sense of adventure in my photos because my awesome clients fall in love with Jasper for a reason. Most are outdoorsy, not scared of what the mountains may throw at them on their wedding day, but rather embrace the wonderful memories that come with it all.
Choosing the right wedding photographer is a crucial decision, and understanding their editing style is an important factor to consider. By considering your own preferences and communicating them to potential photographers, you can find a photographer whose approach aligns with your vision and helps bring your wedding day to life in a way that is authentic, beautiful, and timeless.

The Pros and Cons of Each Wedding Season from a Professional Photographer's Perspective
It’s that time of year again, engagement season! I know that many people are looking into planning their future weddings at the moment and there are a lot of couples hoping to get hitched in the mountains. Getting married in the Rockies can be an absolutely magical experience, but there can be a lot to consider when it comes to planning your special day here.
As a wedding photographer living in Jasper National Park, I have seen firsthand the beauty and magic that this incredible location can bring to a wedding. However, one of the most common questions I get asked is, "What's the best season to get married in Jasper?" The truth is that each season has its own unique pros and cons, so let's take a closer look at what you can expect if you decide to have your wedding in Jasper National Park in each season.
Spring Weddings in Jasper
This elopement happened on a lovely spring day in April, I loved their relaxed and cozy vibe. ♥
Pros:
Spring temperatures in Jasper are typically cooler than in the summer months, providing a more mild environment for outdoor weddings and activities. If you’re someone who doesn’t love the summer heat this could be the best time for you. Just remember that the mountains still have chilly days in the spring so bring warm clothing options just in case.
It is also a great time for wildlife sightings, which can add an extra special touch to your wedding experience (as always, make sure you are a safe distance away when viewing wildlife).
With fewer tourists around, you can enjoy a more peaceful and intimate wedding experience.
Spring is typically considered the shoulder season in Jasper, which means you may be able to take advantage of lower rates for accommodations, venues, and other services.
If you come before late May, generally the rivers are still beautifully clear/blue, not yet turned milky from the glacier melt.
As the season progresses, the days become longer, providing more time for outdoor activities and photography.
Cons:
Spring weather can be unpredictable, with the potential for rain or even snow. This means you may need to be flexible with your plans and prepare for changing weather conditions.
Mosquitoes and other bugs can be prevalent in the spring, so be sure to pack some bug spray.
Be prepared for mud on the trails if you are keen on getting photos in areas off of the paved/landscaped spaces of the park (I have ideas that can help, so feel free to ask me during our call).
Higher risk of trail closures. Depending on the weather and trail conditions, some trails may still be closed due to snow/mud or wildlife (like calving elk and increased bear activity) in the early spring months.
Some roads are closed until late May or mid June in the Park, so if you are eloping into a certain area make sure to do your research.
Late Spring is also the time when the snow melts and the rivers can swell up. This can lead to some trails or areas of the park being closed due to flooding.
Summer Weddings in Jasper
This elopement photo was snapped in the last weekend of August. ♥
Pros:
Summer is the most popular season for weddings in Jasper National Park, and for good reason! The weather is warm and sunny, making for a comfortable and enjoyable wedding experience.
With long daylight hours, you'll have plenty of time for wedding photos and other outdoor activities.
There are many great outdoor venues and locations to access and choose from in the summer, including lakes, forests, and mountain vistas.
Lush foliage and greenery: The vegetation is in full bloom during the summer, adding to the natural beauty and scenery of Jasper. The wildflowers tend to be in full bloom during June but can last until early August.
Fun outdoor activities! With the weather being warm and sunny, there are plenty of outdoor activities for guests to enjoy before or after the wedding, such as hiking, biking, or picnics. Or for you to incorporate into the wedding itself!
Easier transportation and accessibility. With the roads and trails cleared and open in the summer, transportation and accessibility is much easier, making it simpler for you to explore and guests to attend.
Cons:
Summer is also the busiest season for tourism, which means crowds and potential traffic congestion. It's important to plan accordingly and book early to secure your preferred venues, vendors and accommodations. It can also mean higher prices and fewer available dates as well.
The rivers tend to be high and dirty during the summer months, although the lakes will remain clear and blue.
While the summer weather is generally warm and pleasant, it can also be hot at times. Plan ahead with lots of water available to yourselves and your guests throughout the day. A ceremony later in the day might also be a good way of combating the intense sun/heat.
The warmer weather can also bring an increase in bugs and insects, which can be annoying. Be sure to pack bug spray for you and your guests!
Risk of wildfires. Summer is also the season when wildfires can be a risk in the area, so it's important to be aware of local fire/smoke updates and to have a backup plan in case of emergency. It can also mean smoky photos on your wedding day, but that has pros/cons too! Read more about that here.
With summer being a popular time for vacations and travel, some guests may not be able to attend a summer wedding due to scheduling conflicts or other commitments.
Fall Weddings in Jasper
This photo was taken on October 1st. Although keep in mind that this was during a mild fall, sometimes the leaves are gone after a windstorm or two in mid September. But if you can catch the yellow leaf season, it’s gorgeous! ♥
Pros:
Fall is a beautiful season in Jasper National Park, with stunning autumn foliage and crisp, clear days.
With cooler temperatures, you and your guests can enjoy outdoor activities without the heat and crowds of summer. It generally makes for a comfortable wedding day, but remember that it can still be chilly in the fall. Be sure to bring warm clothing if necessary.
Fall is also a great time for wildlife sightings as the ungulates like elk and deer will be in their rut (just be sure to stay a good distance away from any wildlife for your safety).
With longer nights it increases your chances of seeing the aurora and can make for exceptional stargazing during your stay.
The rivers start to clear up once again, making for lovely riverside photos.
The bugs tend to die off this time of year, woo hoo!
Cons:
As with spring, fall weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for changing conditions and potential rain or snow.
The fall tends to be very popular for weddings, which means it may be still tricky to book with some wedding venues/vendors.
The fall foliage can be short lived, so if you are dead set on the colourful leaves for photos booking in early fall (early to mid September) is highly recommended.
Less daylight. With shorter days in the fall, you'll have less daylight to work with for photos and other activities.
Seasonal Closures start happening once again in the fall. At a certain point some roads close, some tourism opportunities end (like the Miette Hotsprings) and some trails become inaccessible. So it's important to do your research and plan accordingly.
Winter Weddings in Jasper
This was from a wedding at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in late February. ♥
Pros:
Winter weddings in Jasper National Park are truly magical, with snowy landscapes and the increased potential for stunning northern lights displays (because of the longer nights and clearer skies).
The winter season offers unique and cozy wedding venues, such as log cabins and the Jasper Park Lodge (it is incredible to see during the holiday as it is totally decked out in beautiful Christmas decor).
With fewer tourists around, you'll have more privacy and a quieter wedding experience.
Some venues can offer discounted rates for the winter season.
Unique Winter activities. There are plenty of fun winter activities to enjoy before or after your wedding, such as skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing.
A festive atmosphere. The holiday season adds a special festive atmosphere to a winter wedding, with Christmas lights lighting up the town, decorations a glow, and holiday-themed activities happening before Christmas. Afterwards Jasper puts on another fantastic event, Jasper in January, which has fun activities all around town like wine tasting, storytelling, polar plunges and sleigh rides.
Cons:
Winter weather in Jasper National Park can be cold and unpredictable, so be sure to dress warmly and prepare for potential snow and ice. It is also highly recommended to have a bad weather back up plan in place on your wedding day (something I can help with!)
Some wedding vendors and services may be unavailable in the winter season as some accommodations and restaurants close up entirely until spring.
There can be (expected and unexpected) road closures, so be sure to plan accordingly. The parkway is very unpredictable in the winter, something to consider if you need to travel to and from the airport in Calgary. It is the safer bet in general to fly into the Edmonton airport and drive to Jasper from that direction. Things like avalanche clearing can lead to long closures on the parkway and it can be dangerous to drive if you don’t have winter tires or experience with winter driving in general.
Limited daylight. With shorter days in the winter, there is less daylight available for activities and photos.
Not all areas of the park are safely accessible at this time of year due to avalanche terrain and seasonal closures. Be sure to do your research beforehand.
Limited outdoor photography options. While winter provides beautiful snow-covered landscapes, the cold weather can make it challenging to take outdoor photos, especially for extended periods of time. We put your health and safety first so sometimes that means we need to schedule warm up breaks into your timeline, or simply arranging a backup plan if the weather becomes too extreme.
Truly, there is no "best" season to get married in Jasper National Park - it all depends on your personal preferences and priorities. Each season offers its own unique beauty and challenges, so it's important to consider all of your options and make an informed decision. As a professional wedding photographer, I have captured beautiful and unforgettable wedding moments in every season, and I am always excited to work with couples to create the perfect wedding experience in Jasper National Park, no matter what time of year. If you would like to chat more about planning your own wedding and you are looking for a photographer; reach out! I’m always happy to help if you have more questions before deciding on a wedding date. :)

Lace up your skates and let the crisp winter air set the stage for a romantic ice skating date. Culinary Delights: A Fancy Dinner for Two
Winter in Jasper transforms the town into a culinary haven, where the snowy landscapes create a unique backdrop for delightful dining experiences. As the snow blankets the surroundings, it adds a touch of cozy magic to the local restaurant scene. Keep in mind that some summer favorites may take a seasonal break or have adjusted hours, so a quick call ahead is recommended to ensure a smooth dining experience. Despite these seasonal changes, Jasper boasts a winter lineup of fantastic eateries. Favorites like The Raven offer a cozy retreat with delightful dishes, Evil Dave's stands out for its culinary innovation, and The Inn Grill showcases locally inspired flavors. The Spooky Secrets of Jasper National Park: A Halloween Photoshoot Tradition
When the crisp autumn breeze starts to rustle the leaves and the nights grow longer, something magical happens in the heart of Jasper National Park. Amidst the eerie wilderness and under the light of the setting sun, I embark on a thrilling and hauntingly beautiful tradition - my annual Halloween photoshoot. Each year, I gather a group of brave souls and venture into the depths of the park to capture the essence of Halloween in its purest, spookiest form.
This shoot took place outside of Jasper, in the spooky rural areas of Alberta.
A Haunting Palette Under the Northern Lights
In the past, we’ve explored the eerie beauty beneath the dancing Northern Lights, where the green and purple hues of the aurora borealis provided a mystical backdrop to our spooky escapades. The ethereal glow added an otherworldly touch to the photos, making them especially captivating. Truly this shot looks like it came straight out of a horror movie.
This shoot took place outside of Jasper, in the spooky rural areas of Alberta.
Embracing the Shadows of the Past
One particularly memorable year, we ventured into the realm of abandoned buildings, where the ghosts of the past seemed to echo in the silence. The moonlight cast eerie shadows, and the creaking floorboards added a layer of suspense to our shoot. I remember walking up to this spot in particular getting really intense vibes from the little house. I am definitely used to random spirits (growing up in a haunted house and being able to see the other side easily) but this place was different, it had me on edge and gave me constant goosebumps… the perfect spot for some spine-chilling photographs. I have to say I would go back again if I had the chance!
Finding Light in the Darkness
Not all Halloween shoots need to delve into the depths of darkness. Some years, we embrace a lighter, yet still a fun and spooky, vibe. Not every person I work with wants to do a full on horror shoot, and I don’t mind that at all! That’s what keeps the shoots fun and engaging for me, every year is different from the last. What matters the most is that we have some fun while we are out creating something a little different for our audience.
Every Costume Tells a Tale
One of the most exciting aspects of these photoshoots is working with models who bring their creativity and imagination to life. Some choose to embrace the darkness with elaborate and macabre costumes, while others opt for a subtler, mysterious allure. Each costume tells a story, adding depth and complexity to our images.
Capturing the Spooky Essence
As a photographer, my goal is to make viewers feel the same spine-chilling atmosphere we experience during these shoots. I want you to sense the crunch of leaves beneath your feet, hear the faint whispers of the wind, and feel the anticipation of what might be lurking in the shadows. Through careful composition and an understanding of light and darkness, I strive to capture moments that transport you to the heart of the eerie wilderness.
A Tradition Continues
This Halloween season was no exception. Surrounded by the ancient trees and enveloped in the inky darkness of the forest, we once again embarked on our spooky adventure. The models, dressed in their carefully curated costumes, embraced the spirit of the season, and together, we created images that are both haunting and enchanting.
As I look back on these experiences, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore the depths of creativity and capture the essence of Halloween in its various forms. Each photoshoot is a reminder of the beauty that can be found in the eerie and the unknown, and I am excited to continue this tradition in the years to come.
So, if you find yourself wandering through the misty woods of Jasper National Park on a Halloween night, keep your eyes peeled - you might just stumble upon a group of daring souls, capturing the spooky secrets of the night, one photograph at a time.
6 Unique Things You Can Do For Your Couples Photos In Jasper
There is a reason why people come from all around the world to see Jasper, it's an absolutely stunning landscape and it has some interesting experiences that go hand in hand with the mountain area. Things that you can do for your next photo session! In fact, these photo sessions are so much fun it will simply feel like a fun date, not a posed and stiff photo shoot. As a photographer who lives in Jasper I love when my clients allow me to help them photograph these fun moments.
Have A Cozy Bonfire
Are you wanting something different for your photos but aren't keen on doing anything too strenuous? Let's make a campfire, some hot chocolate and get cozy with your partner. I really love this sort of photo shoot in the winter time as well because it's super romantic and you are able to stay warm when it's chilly too. So grab your marshmallows and let's do this thing!
*(Please note that this is only for when there is no fire ban and in Jasper the fires must be in designated locations. This particular session was from outside the National Park. Please consult with Megan Posein Photography when planning this shoot so that she can answer any questions!)
Canoeing/Kayaking Adventures
Being able to capture a couple while they are playfully exploring one of our beautiful lakes makes for such amazing photos. Jasper has some of the most breathtaking water in the world, the lakes are usually a stunning shade of blue and are surrounded by impressive mountain scenery. If you are thinking about this kind of shoot please keep in mind that you need to be able to easily maneuver your boat and be comfortable in slightly windy conditions. As with most adventure shoots we will talk about a backup plan if the weather isn't cooperating so that you still have an enjoyable time.
Get Some Camping Cuddles
These photos are best when you haven't already been camping for a week, but hear me out on this one. Camping photos are so inviting. You can get a pretty scene going with just a fire, a lamp in your tent/van and some twinkle lights. If you and your partner are always camping all summer anyways, these photos are truly going to capture you both in your happy place and allow you to be super relaxed. When you relax in front of the camera that's when the magic happens and you create images that you'll never forget!
Head Out For Some Hiking
First of all, don't let this heading scare you off. You don't need to be crazy fit or super outdoorsy to get amazing hiking photos of you and your partner. There are different levels of trail accessibility here in the park so it's only a matter of finding the right one for you! Jasper's scenery definitely has a lot of wow factor that will make your photos pop. Looking for a gorgeous mountain print that you can blow up and put on your wall? Sure thing, but you'll be right smack dab in the middle of it making it that much more special and always reminding you of your amazing trip to Jasper.
Stargazing Evenings
Did you know that Jasper is a dark sky preserve? Meaning that our night skies are some of the best in the world! If you are lucky enough to have clear skies during your trip to Jasper you should definitely consider a stargazing shoot with you and your partner. This kind of photo session is a bit harder to pull off because nobody knows what the skies will bring on the night of your session. However, if you plan something like a sunset photo shoot or a bonfire shoot you can always wait to see what the sky does and hopefully capture the images you have in mind. Or simply take some fun night photos regardless of what the stars are doing, as these kinds of shots are still eye-catching and unique.
Snowshoeing Together
I just had to add a winter activity to this list as well! Snowshoeing can be such a romantic date idea and it's something that most people can physically do. Pick a trail (like the ones behind the Jasper townsite in the Pyramid Lake/bench area) that are relaxing but still have a bit of adventure to them. If you decide to head out elsewhere in the park make sure that you aren't wandering into avalanche terrain! You can rent snowshoes from Jasper Source for Sports in town and pack some hot chocolate to crack open on a trail break. All in all this is usually a wonderful date idea for most couples, so add it to your bucket list.
So there you have it! Something different for your photos in the mountains. Bonus points if you work one of these into your Jasper wedding day as well, but that's a post for another time. As always, feel free to reach out for more information on sessions like these. I'm always happy to answer questions and plan memorable shoots that will have you excited for your moment in front of the camera!

Join us as we embrace summer vibes, creating timeless memories that go beyond the wedding day. Get inspired to think outside the box and unleash your love story against breathtaking backdrops. Greetings, fellow lovebirds! I am thrilled to share the story behind our latest endeavour, the Wedding Portrait Project. As professional wedding photographers and happy partners in both life and business, my partner Jeff and I knew that our own special day needed something extraordinary. With the summertime vibes filling the air, we embarked on an epic journey to create timeless memories in the breathtaking landscapes of Jasper National Park.
A Unique Vision: You see, we wanted to break free from the traditional constraints of capturing wedding photos in a single day and location. We wanted to savour the beauty of our home, Jasper, and explore all the extraordinary spots that hold a special place in our hearts. So, armed with a gorgeous dress that could be easily packed and quickly changed into, we set out to inspire brides (and grooms!) with our non-traditional approach to wedding portraits.
Endless Possibilities in Jasper: Jasper National Park is a wonderland of awe-inspiring locations, each more magical than the last. Our project aims to encourage brides to think outside the box and embrace the idea of wearing their dress for more than just the wedding day. Why let it hang in the closet, collecting dust, when you can give it new life against the backdrop of your dream location? By opting for separate portrait sessions, you can create a stress-free experience without compromising time on the wedding day itself.
Capturing the Essence: To kick-start the Wedding Portrait Project, we ventured into a magnificent canyon, surrounded by mesmerizing ice formations. It was a tad chilly, but the goosebumps were worth it when we saw the enchanting images we had captured. This inspired the next location in this saga, an ice cave in the Columbia Ice field. Once again, a cold location that included a bit of a trek but it was a lot of fun and something we will never forget! Now as the winter has turned to summer we have been looking at some of our favourite locations more accessible in the warmer months. In this latest chapter we ventured out to a nearby lake with pristine blue waters. There was a haze of smoke in the air from distant wildfires, so we picked a spot that would showcase the mountain beauty close up and focused on more tightly cropped portraits showcasing the water background. As always, the blend of natural beauty and our own story unfolded before our lenses, creating memories that will forever remember. Each portrait session in this series will be an unforgettable adventure, a journey through love and nature that we cherish deeply.
A Keepsake for a Lifetime: As our wedding grows closer we have decided to continue our project after the big day as well. This way we can switch and have Jeff in front of the camera too (we didn't want to get his suit dirty before the wedding day haha)! Once the project is complete, we'll be excited to compile an album featuring all the remarkable locations we've explored. This tangible keepsake will serve as a constant reminder of our incredible journey and the love that brought us together in this amazing place. It's not just a collection of photographs; it's a treasure trove of cherished memories that we'll hold close to our hearts forever.
Join Us on Our Adventure: If our Wedding Portrait Project resonates with you, we invite you to follow along and be inspired. Discover the joy of breaking free from conventions, of celebrating your love story in the most enchanting corners of the world. And remember, we're here to help you plan and book a photo session that will capture your own unique love story, creating memories that will stand the test of time.
As we eagerly anticipate the next chapter of our Wedding Portrait Project, we invite you to embrace the magic that lies beyond the traditional boundaries. Through the Haze: Inspiring Photo Sessions in Jasper's Wildfire Smoke
Capture breathtaking moments amidst the dramatic smoky mountain landscape of Jasper. Embrace the unique atmosphere and harness dramatic lighting to capture unforgettable portraits. Prioritizing safety, we communicate with our clients to address concerns and modify sessions if needed. With open communication, careful planning, and adherence to safety guidelines, our professional photography services ensure a secure and enjoyable experience.
As the winds carry the remnants of distant wildfires, our picturesque town of Jasper is currently enveloped in a veil of smoky haze. While such conditions may seem discouraging for outdoor activities, including photography, there are intriguing reasons to embrace the ethereal atmosphere and capture stunning images amidst the smoke. In this blog post, we'll explore the advantages of photographing in smoky conditions, as well as important safety considerations to keep in mind.
Embracing the Unique Atmosphere: One of the primary advantages of photographing in smoky conditions is the opportunity to capture a truly unique atmosphere. The diffused sunlight and hazy backdrop lend an enchanting and moody quality to your images. Embrace the surreal ambiance, and let the smoke-infused air add a touch of mystique to your photographs.
Harnessing Dramatic Lighting: Smoky conditions create a natural filter that scatters sunlight, resulting in soft and diffused lighting. This atmospheric effect can add depth and drama to your images, transforming ordinary scenes into captivating works of art. Take advantage of the gentle, even illumination to minimize harsh shadows and emphasize details that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.
Vibrant Colors: Smoke in the atmosphere can intensify and alter the appearance of colors. The diffuse lighting can enhance the saturation and richness of hues, resulting in more vibrant and visually striking photographs. This effect can be particularly pronounced during sunrise or sunset when the sun's rays pass through more layers of the atmosphere.
Exploring Unique Compositions: Smoky conditions present a chance to explore new and creative compositions. The layers of smoke create a sense of depth and texture, allowing you to experiment with foreground, mid-ground, and background elements. Incorporate the smoke as a leading line, frame your subjects against the atmospheric backdrop, or capture captivating silhouettes. The possibilities are endless when you embrace the unique elements that smoky conditions provide.
Safety Considerations: Photographing in smoky conditions necessitates prioritizing your well-being. While the smoke can add an intriguing touch to your images, it's essential to heed safety guidelines. Here are a few important considerations:
a. Monitor Air Quality: Stay informed about the air quality index and pay attention to official advisories. If the air quality reaches hazardous levels or if visibility is significantly impaired, it's best to postpone your outdoor activities, including your photo session. A general rule of thumb, as advised by local medical professionals, is that if you can see the Jasper Skytram, outdoor activities are generally safe.
b. Minimize Exposure: If conditions are suitable for photography, plan your shoot wisely. Consider shortening the length of the photoshoot to reduce the time spent in smoky conditions. Choose a location that doesn't involve a long or strenuous walk, ensuring you can easily retreat to a safe area if needed.
c. In the event that the threat of wildfires becomes imminent (which it isn't at the moment in June 2023), it is crucial to prioritize your safety and take necessary precautions. As professional photographers, we understand the importance of rescheduling or postponing a photoshoot if there is a high risk of wildfire. It is essential to stay informed about official guidelines and recommendations from local authorities regarding evacuations or other safety measures. As part of your preparation, it is advisable to have an evacuation plan in place, ensuring that you and your loved ones know how to leave the town efficiently and safely if required.

d. Let's Talk: it is our priority to ensure your safety and well-being during any smoky photoshoot. That's why open communication is essential. Before your session, we will reach out to you to discuss your preferences and concerns, and address any safety considerations. Together, we can determine the best location that will work optimally in the unique smoky conditions, while ensuring your comfort and safety. If needed, we are prepared to modify the session accordingly, whether it's shortening the length of the shoot or adjusting the activities. In case the air quality becomes a significant concern, we will discuss the possibility of rescheduling the date of your photo session. Your safety is our utmost concern, and we are committed to providing a secure and enjoyable photography experience in all circumstances.
Photographing my clients in the smoky conditions of Jasper presents a remarkable opportunity to capture unique and captivating images that showcase the ambiance of this extraordinary setting. By embracing the interesting atmosphere and using the smoke creatively, we can create photographs that evoke a sense of mystery and allure. Finding ideal shooting locations that balance safety and aesthetics will ensure that your portraits truly reflect the beauty of Jasper. The Wedding Portrait Project: A Glacial Adventure
Follow Megan Posein Photography, a professional wedding photographer team based in Jasper National Park, as she continues her wedding portrait project. The aim is to capture her own wedding portraits in all of her favourite places in Jasper. This time making it out to a glacial ice cave for the photo session.
As professional wedding photographers living in Jasper National Park, Jeff and I knew that our own wedding photos had to be something truly special. We are officially getting married in August, but until then we wanted to take photos in all the places we love within Jasper National Park, something that would have been impossible in just one day. We had already kicked off our Wedding Portrait Project with a shoot in a stunning icy canyon, but we were eager to take things to the next level. That's why we decided to trek by snowshoe into a glacial ice cave for our next photo shoot.
Having the right gear is essential for any adventure, especially when it comes to photography. It's important to have reliable and quality equipment that can withstand the conditions and help capture amazing images. With colder temperatures affecting camera batteries, bringing extras was a must. It's also essential to be prepared for any unforeseen circumstances, hence why bringing a survival and first aid kit is crucial for any backcountry explorer. Furthermore, checking for any avalanche risk in the area and considering hiring a guide if necessary is important for safety.
We had one of our friends come out that day too to tag along on our adventure and help us take behind the scenes video which you can see on my Instagram!
Finding the right weather window was also no easy feat. Due to the higher elevation of the area, it's always colder in that part of the park. We prepared as the day approached, making sure everything was in order to do the photos safely and efficiently. Finally, after some perseverance, the day had come and we finally caught a warmer break with a high temperature of about -20 degrees Celsius and relatively calm winds. We got up at sunrise, grabbed some coffee, and headed into the heart of Jasper to start the adventure.
Just staying warm while Jeff prepped the camera equipment for the session.
With the pressure on, I slipped into my wedding dress and we quickly set to work capturing the icy images before I grew too cold to continue. Jeff and I talked about what we had envisioned beforehand and had a game plan in place so that we could get the images in a rapid manner. But it was well worth the effort. The resulting photos were unimaginably beautiful, with the sparkling ice and stunning natural surroundings providing the perfect backdrop for our shoot.
As professional photographers, we always want to inspire brides to think outside the box when it comes to their wedding photos. That's why we started our Wedding Portrait Project, in which we're taking bridal portraits in incredible locations throughout Jasper National Park. By wearing my dress for more than one day, we're hoping to show that it's possible to create stunning, non-traditional wedding photos that truly capture the magic of the occasion.
Of course, not everyone is up for a snowshoe trek into a glacial snow cave for their wedding photos! But we hope that our adventurous shoot inspires brides to seek out the most beautiful and unique locations for their own special day. After all, your wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and your photos should reflect that.
As always, if you're interested in booking a photo session with us, we're more than happy to help create memories that you'll remember for years to come. And stay tuned for more incredible locations as our Wedding Portrait Project continues to unfold! ♥
Why Same-Sex Couples Are Choosing Jasper National Park for Their Dream Elopement
Discover why more and more same-sex couples are choosing Jasper National Park for their dream elopement! In this heartfelt blog post, professional wedding photographer Megan Posein shares her perspective on the rise of same-sex weddings in the Rockies. From the stunning scenery to the spirit of inclusivity, learn why Jasper National Park has become a top destination for couples seeking a truly unique and unforgettable wedding experience. Whether you're planning your own elopement or simply curious about the growing trend, this post is a must-read for anyone interested in celebrating love in all its forms.
As a wedding photographer based in Jasper National Park, I have noticed a growing trend among same-sex couples who are choosing to elope in this beautiful location. I believe there are several reasons why more and more same-sex couples are coming to Jasper National Park to elope, and I'm excited to share my perspective on this trend.
First and foremost, Jasper National Park is a stunningly beautiful location with breathtaking natural scenery that provides the perfect backdrop for any elopement. From rugged mountain peaks to serene alpine lakes, Jasper National Park offers a wide variety of stunning locations for couples to exchange their vows. The park's natural beauty makes it a popular destination for elopements, and same-sex couples are no exception.
Another reason why more same-sex couples are choosing to elope in Jasper National Park is that it is an inclusive and welcoming destination. Jasper National Park has a reputation for being a safe and welcoming place for LGBTQ+ couples. Same-sex couples can feel comfortable expressing their love in a supportive environment, free from discrimination and judgment. Every year the town celebrates the Pride and Ski Festival in April by hosting amazing events such as parties (the best ones around honestly), brunches, ski hill races/festivities and more! The whole town celebrates and Jasper transforms into a more colourful place for (and because of) everyone attending. So when you book an elopement in Jasper, the industry is extremely open and welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community and we look forward to helping your love story come to life during your wedding day (as it darn well should be).
Moreover, the Canadian government has also recognized the importance of inclusivity, equality, and diversity in their policies, which has made Canada an attractive destination for LGBTQ+ travellers from around the world. Canada has a long-standing history of supporting same-sex marriage and has been a leader in promoting LGBTQ+ rights. This progressive stance has helped to make Canada, and Jasper National Park, in particular, a top choice for same-sex couples looking to elope.
Another factor contributing to the growing popularity of eloping in Jasper National Park is the flexibility and affordability it offers. Compared to a traditional wedding, eloping in Jasper National Park can be more cost-effective and less stressful. With smaller guest lists and fewer logistical details to manage, same-sex couples can focus on what matters most: celebrating their love in a beautiful location.
Lastly, eloping in Jasper National Park offers same-sex couples the opportunity to create a unique and personalized experience that truly reflects their love story. They can choose to elope in a location that is meaningful to them, whether it's a mountaintop, a meadow, or a lake shore. With the help of a professional wedding photographer, they can capture their special day in a way that is authentic and heartfelt, with memories that will last a lifetime.
So as a wedding and elopement photographer based in Jasper National Park, I am thrilled to see more and more same-sex couples choosing this beautiful destination to elope. The natural beauty, inclusivity, and flexibility of Jasper National Park make it the perfect location for any couple looking to celebrate their love in a unique and meaningful way. I am honoured to have the opportunity to capture these special moments and help these couples create memories that they will cherish for a lifetime.
